Market Commentary – October 2024

Global stock markets had mixed results in October due to inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical uncertainties. In the U.S., the S&P 500 fell 0.9%, with tech stocks particularly volatile.

Europe saw a 3.2% decline, mainly due to economic struggles in Germany, while Japan’s TOPIX rose 1.9% thanks to corporate reforms and positive investor sentiment.

Emerging markets and Asian stocks dropped 4.0%-4.5%, affected by a stronger U.S. dollar and weaker corporate earnings, especially in India.

Despite short-term ups and downs, global markets have shown positive growth this year, as fears of recession ease and optimism about economic recovery grows.

The Malaysian stock market has outperformed its regional peers this year, driven by growth in domestic sectors like consumer goods, finance, and industry, boosted by government spending and local demand.

However, recent months saw a slight decline as investors became cautious about the economic outlook, potential government policy changes, and slower global demand affecting exports.

Over the medium term, Malaysia’s market may stabilize with ongoing recovery and steady commodity prices, though factors like trade relations and currency changes could add some volatility.

Malaysian Sukuk has shown steady growth this year, supported by low default rates and strong demand from local and international investors, highlighting Malaysia’s strength in Islamic finance.

Sukuk stability is expected to continue, underpinned by a solid regulatory framework, though higher global interest rates could make fixed-income securities, like Sukuk, less attractive.
